Stand three feet from the outdoor unit on the side of a typical 2,400 square foot Gulf Shores home. The kind of property where the original 2008 system has a leaking coil that isn't worth chasing and the homeowner is staring at a full replacement. Walk the install with me.

Step 1. The thing humming on the concrete pad is the new coastal-grade condenser. The "coastal-grade" piece matters. The standard inland version of the same model costs the manufacturer less to build. The premium buys factory-applied epoxy coating on the coil fins, sealed electrical compartments, stainless steel fasteners, and a corrosion-resistant cabinet finish. Step 3. Trace the copper line set running from the air handler out through the wall and down to the condenser. There's a budget 3-ton 14 SEER2 condenser available at wholesale. I don't install it in Gulf Shores. The reason is the same reason coastal homes carry hurricane-rated windows: the local environment is more aggressive than the standard product spec accounts for.

The coastal-grade unit has four upgrades over the budget version. One, an epoxy coating on the aluminum coil fins that prevents galvanic reaction with the salt film. Two, a sealed electrical compartment with gasketed cover that keeps salt-laden moisture out of the contactor and capacitor. Three, stainless steel screws and bolts at every visible fastener — a small parts upcharge that prevents an expensive service-call rust replacement at year five. Four, a corrosion-inhibitor cabinet paint that holds up against UV and salt for the warranted life of the unit.

Skipping these on a Gulf Shores install isn't false economy. It's a guaranteed 5-year-out service problem. A 7-day programmable thermostat with no Wi-Fi and no app is the right pick for owner-occupied homes with a predictable schedule. A full day of skilled labor on a single-day install. Pull the old equipment, dispose of it (refrigerant recovery is required by EPA — not optional, not a place to cut), set the new condenser on the pad, install the new coil in the air handler, run and braze the line set, pull the vacuum, weigh in the charge, wire the disconnect and the contactor, install the thermostat, start the system, verify temperature differential and amp draws, document everything for the permit inspector, and clean up the site.

You can find an unpermitted installer in 2026 who will quote less labor.
