You walk past a vent, the AC cycles on, and for the first thirty seconds the air smells like a damp basement or a towel that never quite dried. Then it fades. By the time you have decided whether you actually smelled it, it is gone. That start-and-fade pattern is one of the most common calls we get once the cooling season ramps up in Baldwin County, and the good news is that it almost always traces back to a short list of causes we can run down quickly.

The reason it shows up here, specifically, is moisture. The condensate pan beneath the coil catches the water that drips off. A clogged or slow condensate drain

The water the pan collects exits through the condensate drain line — usually a length of PVC running to the outside or to a nearby drain. In our climate that line works overtime all summer, and it is a magnet for clogs. Pollen, dust, and biological slime build up inside it, and in a humid environment that gunk thrives. Once the line slows down or clogs entirely, water backs up into the pan, sits there, and stagnates. Now you have a standing-water problem on top of a coil problem, and the smell gets worse.

A clogged drain is more than an odor issue, and this is the part homeowners tend to underestimate. When the line backs up far enough, that water has to go somewhere, and where it goes is your ceiling, your closet floor, or down the wall behind the air handler. We have seen slow drains quietly soak drywall and warp flooring for weeks before anyone connected it to the faint musty smell that started the whole thing. Most modern systems have a float switch designed to shut the AC off before an overflow does real damage — but if yours keeps tripping off on a hot day, a clogged drain is the first thing to suspect, not a reason to keep resetting it.

The wrong filter, or one left in too long

Your air filter is the cheapest, most overlooked piece of the comfort system, and it causes more odor and airflow problems than almost anything else. Two things go wrong with filters and smells.

First, a filter left in past its life gets loaded with dust and the same pollen and organic debris that fouls the coil — and a saturated filter in a humid house can start to smell on its own and choke the airflow the system needs to dry itself out between cycles. Second, the wrong filter causes its own trouble. A filter that is too restrictive for your particular system starves it for air, which can let the coil run colder than it should, sweat more, and even ice up — and more moisture in the wrong places means more odor.

The fix here is genuinely easy and it is one of the few things we encourage you to handle yourself: put in a clean filter of the right size and the right rating for your equipment on a real schedule. In our pollen and dust conditions, that often means checking it monthly during the heavy seasons. If a fresh filter does not clear a musty smell within a few days, the odor is coming from deeper in the system and it is time for us to look.

Damp or contaminated ductwork

Sometimes the smell is not at the equipment at all — it is in the ducts that distribute the air. Ductwork running through a hot Baldwin County attic or a damp crawlspace can sweat, and a duct that has taken on moisture, has a leak pulling humid attic air into the system, or has insulation that has degraded over the years can hold onto a musty smell and broadcast it through the whole house. Start with the one thing you control: swap in a fresh, correctly-sized filter and give it a few days. If the musty smell clears, you caught it early and you are done. Why does my AC only smell musty for the first few minutes after it turns on?
That start-up burst is the classic sign of microbial growth on a damp evaporator coil or in the condensate pan. While the system sits idle, moisture and whatever is growing on the coil settle in. When the blower kicks on, the first rush of air drives those odors out through every vent at once, then fades as the airflow steadies. It is one of the most reliable tells we use to separate a coil-and-drain problem from a duct or filter problem — a smell that is strongest at start-up and eases off almost always points back to the coil and pan.
Will a UV light fix musty AC odors?
Sometimes — but only after the source is confirmed and cleaned. A UV light installed at the coil can help keep biological growth from re-establishing on a coil that has been cleaned and is draining properly, which makes it a reasonable add-on in our humid climate. What it cannot do is substitute for the cleaning itself or fix a clogged drain. Putting a UV light on a fouled coil with standing water in the pan is treating the symptom and ignoring the cause. We diagnose first, fix the actual problem, and only then talk about whether UV is worth it for your system.
Is a musty smell from my AC dangerous, or just unpleasant?
For most people it is mainly unpleasant, but it should not be ignored — especially in a home with anyone who has asthma, allergies, or other respiratory sensitivity. A musty odor means moisture is sitting somewhere it should not, and persistent dampness inside an HVAC system can support biological growth that ends up circulating through the house every cooling cycle. There is also a hidden-damage angle: a backed-up condensate drain can rot out a ceiling or warp flooring long before the smell becomes unbearable. We treat a musty smell as an early warning worth running down, not a quirk to live with.
Can I clean the AC myself to get rid of the smell?
You can handle the easy front-line items yourself: change to a clean, correctly-sized filter, keep the area around the outdoor unit clear, and if you are comfortable doing it, pour a cup of distilled vinegar down the accessible end of the condensate drain line to discourage buildup. What we do not recommend is opening the air handler to scrub the evaporator coil — the coil fins bend easily, the pan and drain often need to be pulled and flushed correctly, and the electrical and refrigerant components in there are not DIY territory. If a filter change does not clear the odor in a few days, that is the point to call us.
